Canadian Traditional Red River Jigging

For the past several years, we have honoured John’s wish to preserve the traditional Red River Jig.  This has been done by modifying the prize board, continuing to ensure that the judges are not only capable, but knowledgable about the traditional steps and how to judge them, and also making sure that our instructors for the workshops continue to teach traditional steps.

We feel we have made great progress, and we will continue. However, as things evolve and change, we see a development of many more people dancing the Red River jig, in what for lack of a better term, John is calling Contemporary or Modern Style, and we feel we need to support those efforts as well, but also feel it’s necessary to separate the two in order to continue our goal of preserving the traditional style.

So, beginning this year, ALL jiggers will enter their respective age classes for the preliminaries, and during the judging of that round, the competitors that qualify will be moved into the traditional category.

The rules for traditional will remain the same, and each contestant must dance a minimum of three traditional steps to advance.

After this separation, the top three competitors in each age category will be left in the contemporary category and judged accordingly.

Traditional Rules and Regulations

  1. NO CLICKERS allowed
  2. Only steps considered traditional are counted.
  3. If a step is done on the right foot - it must also be done on the left foot
  4. All slides that are done with the feet must be followed by a tap of the foot
  5. Shaking of the feet and legs will not be counted.
  6. No steps can be duplicated unless they are danced as part of another step
  7. The person with the most qualifying will win.

Challenges

Those awarded second place in their category, can challenge the first place contestant.

Rules 1 through 6 (as above) apply to challenges as well.

  • As the "challenger" you must follow the winner until he/she runs out of steps.
  • The two dancers will dance in a circle and face each other in the steps
If the challenger breaks the step being done by the leader - the competition is over.
  • If the challenger follows all the steps and the leader runs out - he/she is the new leader and must dance one more step to win.
